Casa Performance Lambretta Taper Roller Upper Steering Bearing Conversion
Model post'65
Kick the balls out!
The Lambretta top steering bearing, with tiny caged balls, is pedal cycle technology and not really up to the job of high performance engines and powerful front disc brakes. With these you have the problem of the bearings often coming loose, or becoming notchy if you tighten them too much.
The solution is to change to modern motorcycle technology and use a taper roller bearing, but this conversion is not as easy as it looks. The problem is that a taper roller bearing is thicker, leaving very little space for a locking ring or requiring other adjustments so that the bearing does not come loose.
Casa Performance have developed a very smart solution which permits a taper roller bearing to be used in the original space at the top of the fork tube. The clever part is a special thin locking ring which has a lip that sits perfectly inside the upper part of the bearing. This lip means the bearing self-centralises with the steering tube every time.
With the supplied 38mm steering spanner you can then fit the second lock-nut to tighten the assembly, which will prevent your bearings from coming loose.
By this method Casa Performance can now offer a completely ‘Plug-and-play’ taper-roller upgrade to those troublesome old ball bearings.
